Galway City

Galway, is one of the fastest growing city in Ireland, has a population of 66,000, which rises to 296,000 within a 60km radius. Galway is 1.25 hours from both Shannon International Airport and Knock International Airport, and 2 hours from Dublin which combined provide ready access to US, UK and Europe.

Galway is emerging as an international centre of excellence for manufacturing and research in the medical and biomedical sectors. Overseas companies in Galway include Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Tyco (Covidian), Hewlett Packard, Nortel, Siebel Systems, SAP, Cisco and Fidelity.

Galway has two major third level institutions, National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), which together have a total student population of 21,500.

NUIG, voted 'Irish University of the Year' in 2002, has 11,000 full-time and 3,000 part-time students in seven faculties. NUIG has world-class research centres in regenerative medicine, biomedical engineering, applied optics, laser applications, diagnostics, web technology and power electronics.

GMIT, including a smaller campus in Castlebar, has 4,500 full-time and 3,000 part-time students taking programmes in six schools viz. Business, Engineering, Science, Humanities, Nursing and Hotel & Catering. 

Galway is world-renowned for its lifestyle and leisure activities, which include its annual Horse Racing, Arts, Oyster and Literary festivals. It is a major tourist centre.
